Rentman was created in 1994 by Nigel Gomm and sold directly by him to Lettings Agents in London. In 1996 Nigel subcontracted out the installation and training of Rentman to Peter Newbery; Newbery then recruited Gary Whittaker to handle support calls.
In 1998 Nigel emigrated to Canada but continued to develop and support Rentman operating as "DotGomm Inc". Newbery and Whittaker stayed in London to handle sales, marketing, and support, creating the distribution company "Rentman Software Ltd" for this purpose. When one of the original support technicians; a South African living in London returned home, he opened a remote office there. Over time, due to ease of training and coordination this led to the entire support team being based in South Africa.
Nigel continued full-time development of Rentman from Canada providing constant updates, with major changes including launching an early cloud based version in 2008, and the modern version of the cloud system in 2015. In 2020 Nigel's company DotGomm created a new web portal for Rentman called "rentman.online" providing access for landlords, tenants, and contractors as well as a streamlined interface for agents to use when out of the office on their phones and tablets.
In January 2025 Nigel gave Rentman Software Ltd notice that their distribution rights would terminate 15 May 2025 and launched the UK based "DotGomm Ltd" to handle future distribution of the Rentman application in UK and Eire.
